Summer vacations had begun. This year, the vacation was special for Jacey as she was taking her friends Sara, Nick, and Robin to her village, Lancing.
As soon as their exams were over, Jacey and her friends along with her parents left for Lancing by bus.
Their journey was filled with fun and laughter. they reached Lancing in the evening. Jacey's house was just a short walk from the bus station.
The children ran towards the house with Jacey's parents following behind.
Jacey's grandparents stayed in a house in the village.
Her grandmother served all the guest water and mango shake.
"Wow, Granny! I really like mango shake. Did you make this at home?" asked Jacey.
"Yes!" said Granny. "This mango shake is made from the mangoes that grow in our orchard. I have made some mango pickle for you too."
"You are my favorite!" said Jacey bugging her Granny with a big smile.
"Will the children like to visit the mango orchard tomorrow morning?" asked grandfather.
"Yes definitely, Grandpa. That will be exciting," said Sara. "We have never seen so many mango tres together."
The children woke up early the next day and got ready. they bathed and got ready.
Granny had made breakfast, Jacey, and her friend ate it and drank tea and left for the orchard with Grandpa.
The orchard was a short walk from the home.
"Wow! There are many mango trees here!" exclaimed Nick.
"And look at the mangoes. Some are ripe, and some are not," said Robin.
"Grandpa, how do you pluck the mangoes from the trees?" asked Sara.
Grandpa answered, "We have two men who collect the mangoes. they climb the trees to pluck the mangoes.
I have called them today, as Granny wants to teach you all to make mango shake and mango pickle. We will take green mangoes for the pickle and the ripe mangoes for the mango shake."
"How old is the mango orchard?" asked Jacey. "And how should we take care of the trees?"
Jacey's Grandpa replied, "The mango orchard is about twenty-five years old; it was started by my father using the right quantity of water and fertilizers. But sometimes if the rains arrive early, that damages the mango crop."
While Grandpa explained, the two helpers plucked ripe and unripe mangoes and kept them in separate bags and they left for home.
As soon as they reached the house. Granny asked all of them, "How did you find our mango orchard?"
"Yes Granny!" they replied together.
The next day Granny sat down with the children. She said, "First, we will make mango pickle. Jacey, please wash all the green mangoes,"
After Jacey had done the washing, Granny said, "Cut the mangoes into small squares for the pickle." Granny showed them how t cut the mangoes.
Granny then added a spluttering of mustard, lentil, and other spices to the cut mangoes, followed by salt. She explained, "Saltworks as preservative.e W will put the pickle in a glass bottle and keep it in the sunlight for fifteen days."
Soon, the pickle was done. "Now let's make mango shake. Tha's also easy. We will use ripe mangoes for this Nick, will you wash the ripe mangoes for me, please?" asked Granny.
Nick washed the ripe mangoes and gave them to Granny.
Granny said, "Now we will squeeze the mangoes with our hands. We will collect the mango pulp in a utensil, then mix it a mixer and add sugar in the end."
the children made mango shake following the instructions.
By learning how to make mango pickle and mango shake, the children made good use of their summer holidays that year.
The holidays passed quickly. Soon, Jacey and her friends were all set to go back to London. Granny gave them each a jar of mango pickle and some mangoes. the children were grateful.
Grandpa said, "Do come again, next year."
"Definitely Grandpa!" said the children.
